Marc Howland and Robert Gillett, the co-founders of weCliq, are two ex-Brown University football players turned app entrepreneurs giving the word groupie a whole new meaning.
Picture it: you’re traveling with a group of friends in a country where you don’t speak the language. So you hop on to your new mobile app, weCliq, snap a fun group picture (aka a “groupie”) and share it with people nearby to meet up in real-life. Thanks to weCliq, you can now have these real-time hangouts wherever you go–whether it’s your favorite local hangout or on an international adventure. Currently available on iOs, the app is like SnapChat meets Tinder for meeting people, minus the hassle of coordinating a meetup at a later date.
The idea for weCliq emerged from Robert’s personal experience as a pro-football player in Italy. Frustrated by the language barrier and cautious about approaching random people, he found it difficult to meet and connect with people in the area. Thus, the idea for weCliq was born. After returning stateside, Robert, who studied mechanical engineering, reached out to his former teammate and investment banker turned private equity investor, Marc, to partner in developing the app.
Since launching, weCliq has won the top prize at Startup Weekend Orange County in November 2014 and is aggressively pursuing worldwide penetration. The weCliq team is gearing up to launch the app live at Harvard, NYU and Columbia this fall. Keep an eye out for these fellas – we may be witnessing the next Facebook in the making.
