The Dream Is Free, The Side Hustle Is Sold Separately

What if I told you that you don’t have to be a young, white college kid living in a frat-style apartment with five strangers to be a serious entrepreneur?

Last week, I had a moment of clarity. I realized that for many of us, the idea of being an entrepreneur is this elusive concept that’s only achievable by certain type of people. And by certain type of people I mean: risk takers or young college students with wealthy parents to fall back on if an idea fails. It occurred to me that the one thing stopping most people (including me) from going after our dreams, is this idea that it’s just not for us – it’s for those “other” people with more courage.

But the truth is, not all of us can move to San Francisco to live dorm-style with random people and exist on ramen while rocking t-shirts and jeans every day. No, some of us actually have to keep that income flowing to take care of bills (hello, student loans!) and day to day expenses. And that’s ok. Entrepreneurship is the last place that should be defined by a box – and you don’t need to look a certain way, or have a certain story to do it. It FINALLY dawned on me that many of the people we look up to were once just like us – all they had was a dream and a day job. They side hustled day by day to make it work. They didn’t quit their day job without a viable business or plan of action.

I get it. Really, I do. The world of working for yourself and becoming an entrepreneur can seem overwhelming and discouraging. But what if you had an outlet, a hub you could turn to to get the motivation and information to start small, and get going – wherever and whoever you are? If that interests you, you’re in the right place. We’re making some changes around CailaKSpeaks, and I invite you to stay with me along this journey. Because once you discover that the world of working for yourself starts with the simple, bite sized steps you can do as a side hustle, you will discover how to make your ideas a reality – and a paycheck.

  1. I love your site and your message! The side hustle is something that is gaining popularity in the Millennial community (primarily us MOCs). Oftentimes, these side hustles are our dream gigs and not just a part time job to make extra cash.
Again, I love your posts and I look forward to reading more! :)
